ABSTRACT

My abstract paintings, full of texture and rich earth tones, imitate the world that grounds us, and the ways in which we connect with our surroundings. I am inspired by the beautiful scenery that surrounds us in the sunny Okanagan including vineyards, orchards, and extensive hiking trails. I enjoy incorporating these aspects of the terrain in my landscape paintings.

Coricancha I, II, III Resin Coated Mixed Media on Canvas Private Collection I have been fortunate to accompany my husband, who is a geologist, on a few underground mine tours. The beauty found in the rock formations of the Coricancha Mine of Peru led me to create this abstract triptych. The organic textures created by crackle paste layered with rich earth tones quickly captured my interest, and I eagerly explored other mediums that would help me depict the character of the rock face. Hints of interference colour add an unexpected surprise to the natural colours.

Underground 16” x 20″ Mixed Media on Canvas Experimenting with various layers of different gel mediums and trying to expose a number of layers helped to develop “Underground”.  I am constantly on the lookout for bits of metal – especially if they are old and rusted. Incorporating these into my artwork creates a unique challenge that enhances the textures of the piece. It makes you want to reach out touch it and feel the roughness of the coarse material against the smooth texture of the acrylic mediums and paint.
